Mornington Light Rail
It is believed that so many passengers would use Balcombe station to get to work from outside Mornington, especially during peak hour and special events at Mornington Racecourse, that buses will not be enough to carry them all. To this end, a light rail line would be used to carry these passengers.
Stops
The Mornington Light Rail would run along Mornington-Tyabb Road and Main Street for its entire length, serving 8 stops:
- Balcombe station
- Mornington Racecourse
- 'The Mornington' Retirement Village
- Civic Reserve
- Flinders Park
- Surrey Street
- York Street
- Main Street
Services and Rollingstock
Tram services would run every 20 minutes on weekdays, or hourly on weekends. During special events at Mornington Racecourse, weekend services would run every 30 minutes, plus a second tram would depart Balcombe station at the same time as each tram, running only as far as Mornington Racecourse, doubling capacity to each special event. These trams would return to Balcombe station via a track built on the roundabout at Racecourse Road.
Services would initially be run by Yarra Trams' 5 C2 class "Bumblebee" trams. In addition to being Melbourne's second-biggest class of tram, transferring them to Mornington as opposed to the bigger E class means one less class of tram for Yarra Trams to source parts for, train to drive and train to maintain, since there is such a tiny number of these trams.
