Frankston-Cranbourne Rail Link

As part of Stage 3 of the project, a new cross-city line would be built to serve Carrum Downs, and separate peninsula trains from suburban trains between Frankston and Caulfield.

The trains would run via the existing Cranbourne line. To keep travel times down on the longer route, have its track speed increased from 115km/h to 160km/h. The two new tracks added as part of the quadruplication of the Caulfield-Dandenong corridor would also have a track speed of 160km/h. The new line itself would have a track speed of 130km/h.

Bus route 901 would be upgraded steadily in anticipation of this upgrade. In stage 1, weekday frequencies on the 901 would increase from 4 buses per hour to 6 buses per hour, and weekend frequencies would increase from 2 buses per hour to 3 buses per hour. In stage 2, the buses themselves would be upgraded, to either articulated (bendy) buses, double-decker buses or a combination of both. In addition, a new bus route from Frankston to Cranbourne would be introduced, running every 20 minutes.

Cranbourne is one of the fastest-growing suburbs in Melbourne. Significant development is underway in Cranbourne West. It is proposed to build a station among this development as part of the Frankston-Cranbourne Rail Link in Stage 3. This will ease pressure on Cranbourne’s main station, and by extension traffic congestion between it and the new station.

Carrum Downs station would be located at the Carrum Downs Regional Shopping Centre on Hall Road.
